Grateful for Critique Partners

Today, I'm grateful to my critique partners for taking time out of their already busy lives to read my writing so that they can help me make it better. A couple of days ago, I got a critique back from a friend who has a baby due on Saturday. Discussing your story with people who've read it is one of the best parts of writing.

I'm also grateful when they trust me to do the same. The most exciting novel I've read this year hasn't been published. Yet.

And I'm grateful for their patience when I send them enthusiastic e-mails about the pages I'm attaching and then don't attach the pages. Or I do attach the pages, but think I didn't, so I attach them to a new e-mail. Um, yeah. Sleep is NOT over-rated, and neither are great friends.

If you'd like to read a great post on getting the most out of critiques, I just found this one.

What are you grateful for today?

  1. ROFL! BTDT!

I've also raved about my work then had my CP's say, umm No. :)

    I love my CP's too!

  2. I'm grateful for a bright, shiny sky that is clearing away some of the gray clouds that have been hovering over me the last few days.

    =)

  3. Yay! I admit, I'm a little jealous. I have been testing out a few possible critique partners, but success has not been great. (Of course, I haven't been writing a whole lot, so maybe that's the problem!)

Today I am grateful for cute, warm scarves that help fight off the cold while I'm walking to and from campus. :D

  4. Debbie, you'll have more time for writing when this semester is over. I don't know how you get as much done as you do.

  5. Today I am grateful that Braden slept through the night (he's got a cold) and that Joey got ready for school without me having to nag. Priceless, really. :)

  6. I'm with Rorie - I'm grateful that my son slept through the night:) He's had a bad something the past few days. (Saturday night, for example, I got exactly three hours of sleep in two ninety-minute stretches.)

Glad you've been getting some wonderful critiques lately, Myrna, and reading some great stories.

  9. Oh, I must find a critique partner soon. Any ideas on how to go about it?

  10. Rorie and Krista, I'm sorry your boys are sick.

Rosaria, I found mine by reading writer's blogs and offering to read manuscripts for those I connected with. Every now and then people ask if anyone would be willing to read for them. And I've had people volunteer to read mine. The two I mentioned in my post live in Washington and Thailand. I don't know if I'll ever meet them in person, but I'm glad I found their blogs. Good luck!

  11. "What are you grateful for today?"

    That's easy: Paragraph 2, above.

  12. I had a critique group that was going fairly well, but then I dropped out of the writing world for about six months. Now, I don't know where to start with it again. Yet another thing to pick up again.

  14. I love seeing Natalie Whipple's picture now that I've read the book. :)

Myrna, I'm thankful for you, too! It was a pleasure to read your work. And you didn't mention how much grace you extended to me as I kept having setbacks (sick kids, selfish writing binges, etc).

  15. You worked hard for that paragraph, Adam.

I've never really had a "critique group," Kayeleen, but I did skype with one once. It was great, but I'm not sure I'd have time for it regularly. Good luck finding your people.

    Jessie, so was I.

Thank you, Amy, though I'm laughing at the "selfish writing binges." You have to take those moments as they come, or you lose them. And you knew I wasn't in a hurry. Your baby is due in one day, one hour, and seven minutes. :o)
